About me
Jannis Moutafis is by education an electronics engineer but spent most of his professional life in the media sector.
He began his career in the early days of private television in Germany, as a studio engineer at the Cable TV Pilot Project in Munich.
After a time as a senior editor at the electronics trade publication 'Markt & Technik' and as a Germany correspondent for CMP Media, Inc., he changed to the business side of publishing. As a business development manager for CMP Media in Germany he was instrumental in setting up CMP's German subsidiary and establishing CMP-WEKA, a joint venture with the German publishing group WEKA.
As a product developer, he was significantly involved in the launch of several of CMP's US brands in Germany during the Nineties, namely Computer Reseller News, InformatonWeek, and Network Computing. From 1998 to 2000 he was publisher of InformatonWeek, Network Computing and Datacom at CMP-WEKA.
The challenge in the year 2000 was to establish an online-only medium for IT professionals in Germany that featured text and video content – silicon.de. This mission was accomplished – albeit after the dotcom bust and after a management buy-out in 2002.
After four successful and profitable years, silicon.de was sold to CNET Networks, Inc., now a subsidiary of US media giant CBS.
Since 2008 Jannis Moutafis is working as a consultant, helping media companies to develop print and online publications. His focus in particular lies in the integration of print and online products into cross-media brands and organisations. He recently worked for IDG Magazine Media GmbH and Konradin IT Verlag GmbH, among others.
